Whether you’re refining your strategy or just trying to stay informed, this roundup will bring you up to speed on what’s new and what’s next.

What's going on with Meta?

Instagram Edits App Enhancements (May–June 2025):

Instagram launched its standalone video-editing app, “Edits”, now available globally on the App Store and Google Play Store. The app brings powerful tools to help users create and edit videos directly from their phones, positioning itself as a strong competitor to CapCut.

Edits offers features like opacity overlays, teleprompter mode, volume control, advanced filters, and AI-powered inspiration — all free and without watermarks. Users can capture long-form video, manage editing projects seamlessly, and export high-quality, watermark-free content.

The app includes a frame-accurate timeline with clip-level editing, enhanced audio controls, green screen effects, transitions, and AI-driven image animation. A dedicated “Inspiration” tab lets users explore trending Reels and save ideas, while the “Ideas” tab helps organize notes, concepts, and saved content in one place.

It designed Edits to empower creators across platforms, not just within its ecosystem. The company promises ongoing updates and new features based on user feedback, aiming to improve the app on a weekly basis.

If it lives up to its promise, Edits could quickly become a go-to tool for creators seeking to elevate their video content, regardless of where they post.

AI on Instagram

Instagram is adding more AI-powered tools to help users create fun and creative content.

  1. AI Stickers in Stories

Instagram has started rolling out AI stickers for Instagram Stories. These are not the regular stickers — they are smart and can change based on what you type. For example, if you type “space,” it will generate a space-themed sticker. If you type “cute animals,” it creates something related to that. This makes Stories more interactive and unique.
  2. AI Image Animation and Cropping in Edits App

Instagram’s new video-editing app, Edits, recently added AI-powered image animation and smart cropping tools.

Instagram launched Blend:

Instagram Blend was officially launched in April 2025. It allows users to create a shared Reels feed with friends based on their mutual interests and viewing habits. The feature was initially tested with a smaller group of users starting in March 2024.

The Instagram blend feature began to roll out to users as a new cooperative feed. The photo, video sharing service sweep that the new feature works privately, like direct messages, users can invite their friends to join the blend. Once the user accepts the blend request, Instagram will automatically recommend reels for both users as part  of an ongoing feed using the service algorithm.

The company spent over a year testing the blend feature on Instagram before it was launched. It was first spotted on Instagram in March 2024. The meta platform expanded availability to more users over the past few months.

In this new feature, we are able to join a blend after receiving the request, which is delivered in a direct message. After that blend user or members can leave the blend anytime

Meta teen account

In April 2025, Meta expanded its Teen Accounts feature to Facebook and Messenger, following its successful launch on Instagram. This move brings enhanced safety tools to more platforms, helping younger users stay protected online.

Meta first introduced Teen Accounts on Instagram to create a safer digital space for teens. Now, the company has extended these protections to Facebook and Messenger, giving parents greater control over their teens’ experience across all three platforms.

Key indicators of teen account
  • limits on unwanted interactions help reduce contact from unknown or inappropriate accounts.
  • Enhanced privacy settings are enabled by default, ensuring stronger protection without requiring manual setup.
  • Parental controls allow caregivers to monitor activity and manage their teens’ online behavior.
  • Restrictions on live streaming require parental approval before teens under 16 can go live.

DM on threads

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is adding “direct messaging” to its Threads app. This new feature lets users send private messages without switching to Instagram. The company started testing this in some places like Hong Kong and Thailand.

Threads was launched as a text-based social network to compete with apps like X (formerly Twitter). By adding direct messages, Meta wants to make Threads more useful and keep users on the app longer. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the goal is to give people more reasons to use Threads for both public posts and private chats.

Ads on WhatsApp

After years of staying ad-free, WhatsApp is now introducing advertisements on its platform. The Meta-owned messaging app announced on June 16 that it will begin placing ads in its Status feature. Where users share photos, videos, and texts that disappear after 24 hours.

The ads will appear in the Updates tab, which includes both Status updates and Channels. This marks the first time WhatsApp has added ads to its app. Importantly, ads will not show up in personal chats or calls.

Alongside ads, WhatsApp is also launching channel subscriptions and promoted channels. Users can now pay a monthly fee to access exclusive content from specific channels.

Meta acquired WhatsApp in 2014 with plans to eventually monetize its massive global audience. Although WhatsApp originally promised no ads, changes in leadership and Meta’s broader advertising goals made this shift likely.

The Updates tab, used by 1.5 billion people daily, offers a natural space for ads without disrupting private conversations. This move fits into Meta’s strategy to bring advertising into high-engagement areas across its apps.

What’s new with YouTube?

AI-powered content recommendations

YouTube has introduced AI-powered content recommendations to enhance how users discover videos on the platform. By analyzing browsing behavior, watch history, and interactions, the AI system now suggests personalized content that aligns with each user’s interests. This update aims to make the viewing experience more engaging and relevant. As a result, users can expect smarter suggestions that adapt in real time based on what they watch, search, or skip.

In addition to improving individual recommendations, this feature also helps YouTube keep users engaged for longer periods. Since the AI learns from continuous interactions, it becomes more accurate over time, offering better suggestions that match evolving preferences.

The rollout supports both casual viewers and frequent users by streamlining content discovery without requiring manual searches. With this upgrade, YouTube continues to refine its platform using artificial intelligence, making navigation smoother and more intuitive for millions of users worldwide.

Conclusion

Over the past six months, social media platforms have undergone significant transformations, driven by advancements in AI, user privacy concerns, and the growing demand for seamless, engaging content creation tools. Meta has been at the forefront of these changes, rolling out major updates across Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and even WhatsApp — a clear sign that the company is doubling down on AI, creator empowerment, and monetization strategies.

From Instagram’s standalone “Edits” app and AI-powered features like smart stickers and image animation, to the expansion of “Teen Accounts” and the introduction of “DMs on Threads”, the platform is evolving rapidly. Meanwhile, YouTube continues to enhance user experience with “AI-driven recommendations”, and WhatsApp has taken its first steps into advertising, a move many saw as inevitable.

These updates not only reflect how platforms are adapting to user needs but also how brands and creators must stay agile to make the most of new opportunities. As the digital landscape continues to shift, staying informed and flexible will be key to success in the months and years ahead.
