The Birth of Google

Our story begins in 1996 when Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two computer science graduate students at Stanford University, embarked on a mission to organize the ever-expanding World Wide Web. 

At the time, the internet was a chaotic mess of unindexed web pages, making it challenging to find information quickly and efficiently.

Page and Brin developed a revolutionary algorithm called PageRank, which assessed the importance of web pages by analyzing their backlinks. This breakthrough allowed them to create a search engine that could deliver more relevant search results than ever before. 

Initially, their project was named “Backrub,” reflecting the focus on backlinks.

The Name Change

In 1997, the duo decided to change the name from Backrub to something more fitting. After brainstorming and considering various options, they settled on “Google,” a play on the mathematical term “googol,” which represents the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. 

This name choice reflected their mission to organize an almost impossibly vast amount of information on the internet.

Google Inc. is Born

As the search engine gained popularity on Stanford’s campus and beyond, Page and Brin realized its immense potential. In 1998, they founded Google Inc. in a garage belonging to a friend. 

This marked the official beginning of Google as a company.

Initial Growth

Google’s growth was rapid and relentless. In 1999, it secured its first significant round of funding, raising $25 million from venture capitalists. This funding allowed them to invest in infrastructure and expand their team. 

The same year, Google moved its headquarters to a new location in Mountain View, California.

Going Public
