Threads DMs Just Got a Whole Lot More Fun: GIFs, Group Chats & More!
Threads rolls out direct messaging worldwide on Android, iOS, and the web, allowing people 18 and older to converse one-on-one with followers and mutual Instagram friends. The initial release provides default features such as canned emojis and spam reporting, while Threads is gearing up to enhance DM functionality with group messaging, inbox filtering, and more controls. Meta’s privacy controls safeguard DMs, although end-to-end encryption is not yet available, and muting or blocking someone on Threads also blocks them on Instagram connections.
Threads DM expands
Threads is a text-based social media app created by Meta, closely linked with Instagram. It functions similarly to X (formerly Twitter), allowing short-form content sharing with a focus on conversations.
First off, threads are to roll out more dm options, and in addition, GIF and sticker options. In addition, threads added an image option last week.
The platform said it will be expanding the feature to people who aren’t just Threads and Instagram followers. They are also working on a group messaging feature, inbox filters, and other messaging controls.
The DMs feature will be available in most markets where Threads is, except for Japan, Australia, the U.K., and the EU.
Currently, threads DM functions
One-on-one chat:
on threads, we can use one-to-one chat to message for follower or mutual connection on Instagram.
Emojis:
We can use emojis to react to the messages and posts.
Age Restriction:
The feature is currently available only to users over 18 years of age.
Message Requests:
Users can check messages from non-followers in a separate message requests folder.
Integrated Blocking/Muting:
If you mute or block a follower or mutual connection on Threads, they will also be muted or blocked on Instagram.
Image sharing:
Recently, threads added image-sharing options
No End-to-End Encryption:
Threads DMs are not currently end-to-end encrypted, meaning Meta could potentially access the content of messages.
How does it look in the future?
Threads is actively developing and rolling out more direct message (DM) options, including GIF sharing and group chat functionality.
GIF and Sticker Support:
Threads is soon set to get the option to add stickers and GIFs to DMs, following the recent addition of image sharing. This will provide users with more expressive ways to interact within their messages.
DM group chat:
Group chat functionality is also being built into Threads DMs, just like Instagram, allowing users to connect with multiple people in a single conversation. This was a highly requested feature from the users.
DM editing features:
Threads is also planning to include features such as message editing, unsending, and deleting messages, aligning its DM capabilities with other major messaging apps.
Safety and Controls:
Safety is a top priority for Meta, with current DMs restricted to Threads followers or mutual followers on Instagram, aged 18 and above. Message controls will be part of future updates to determine who can send messages and inbox filters.
No End-to-End Encryption:
Up until early July 2025, Threads DMs don't have end-to-end encryption support.
Future Outlook
Meta is working to create new messaging controls that will provide users with greater control over their communication experiences, such as customizable permissions for messages and improved inbox management features. These new features place Threads squarely in the competition with other social messaging platforms, merging the best parts of Twitter-style discussions with the familiarity of Instagram messaging.
The integration of GIFs, group chat support, and advanced editing capabilities will turn Threads into a more comprehensive social communication platform, closing the gap between microblogging and general messaging apps.
